C022594 WAFFEN-SS VETERANS MEMBERSHIP LAPEL PIN.
BACKGROUND: The HIAG (Hilfsgemeinschaft auf Gegenseitigkeit der Angehörigen der ehemaligen Waffen SS) was a German veterans' organization founded in 1951 by former members of the Waffen SS. The organization was intended to support these former SS members, especially in legal and social matters. Among other things, HIAG strove for better pension rights and social rehabilitation for its members, as many former SS members had faced discrimination and exclusion after the war. HIAG advocated that former members of the Waffen SS should be given the same rights as other German soldiers from World War II. However, the Waffen SS was considered a criminal organization by the Allies, which brought with it legal complications. The HIAG attempted to improve the image of the Waffen SS by presenting it as a regular military unit, separate from the political and ideological crimes of the SS. This was met with much criticism because it often amounted to trivializing war crimes. HIAG's activities and positions were highly controversial. The organisation was often accused of condoning Nazi ideology and undermining the processing of the Second World War in Germany. HIAG's influence waned from the 1992s onwards, partly due to changing social and political attitudes towards the Nazi past in Germany. The organisation was officially dissolved although some local groups remained active for some time.
