C021675 M1874 DYER CARBINE CARTRIDGE POUCH.

BACKGROUND: An early production pouch by Watervliet Arsenal that features two characteristics that identify it as early production. This pouch is fitted with three rivet vertical escutcheon plate identified solely with those pouches manufactured at Watervliet during the early period of production. This style of plate was unique to Watervliet as it is more pointed at the top and bottom that later styles with oval plates fixed with four rivets used by both Rock Island and Watervliet Arsenals. Secondly, the implement compartment on the front of the body lacks the brass closing button that was standard on later production pouches.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: A smooth leather pouch that is embossed "US" to the flap. The wood lining is no longer present, and due to the absence of stitching at the top of the interior of the pouch that secured the lining, it appears to have been intentionally removed; perhaps to allow for carrying additional cartridges. The reverse of the pouch is embossed "Watervliet Arsenal" between the straps.
