Originally introduced in the 1840s, the pouch, used by the infantry, carried percussion caps which ignited the musket cartridges was invariably carried on the right front of the waist belt. A seam stitched, blackened bridle leather pouch, whose back extends to form the fold-over flap which covers its entire front. To the front of this flap is a brass oval plate with "U.S." to the front. The lower edge of the flap has rounded corners and narrows to a pointed tab with a stud hole, which mates with a brass stud to the rounded bottom of the pouch. The pouch is fleece lined. Two vertical belt loops are riveted on either side of the reverse. The brass rivets show moderate/heavy verdigris. The leather shows light cracking to the surface with some light chafing to the edges. Leather is overall in a nice supple condition.
