BACKGROUND: Gutta Percha is the species of tree that produces a sap that is a natural latex. In the mid 19th century, gutta percha was used to make highly ornate pieces of furniture. It was used for various objects including "mourning" jewelry as it is dark in color and could easily be molded into beads, as well as, decorative cases for portraits.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Double-armed 15th Wisconsin Infantry. Approximately 8cm x 7cm tintype. Comes complete in its original folding Gutta Percha case.
