C014490 USAAF PILOT'S WINGS.

BACKGROUND: During World War II the Army Air Forces issued a large variety of wings and badges to signify standings and qualifications. The badges were commonly available in a standard 3" wide size for use on tunics and a 2" wide size for use on shirts. The 2" size became known as "sweetheart" wings as they were often sent home to loved ones.

DESCRIPTION: A silver qualification badge, introduced in November of 1941, in the form of a pair of out-stretched wings, whose span is 3", with the shield of the United States to their center. The shield is comprised of vertical bars above which is a narrow horizontal field without stars. To its reverse at the tip of the wings are pins with clutch back devices. "I2I" may be seen stamped to the reverse center.
