C014093 FRENCH FOREIGN LEGION UNIFORM & EQUIPMENT GROUPING.

This grouping consists of a kepi with white cover, M1931 tropical tunic with breeches, a M35 mess kit and a M1931 gas mask with carrier.

1. This issue kepi has the small diameter brass side chinstrap buttons which dates it to the 1920’s. Around 1930 the size of the buttons was increased to the larger style seen on other kepis. Prior to about 1960, the Foreign Legion kepi was a regular infantry kepi with a flaming bomb on the front like this. To achieve the world famous "white kepi" motif, a removable white top was simply put over the issue kepi. Around 1960, the Foreign Legion created a white kepi without a removable top for the first time for ceremonial wear. Also around 1930, the French kepi became stiffer, with more rigid sides for a more "martial" look. This dark blue wool kepi, measuring approximately 10cm high with a red wool crown and dark blue piping. A red, machine embroidered, seven flame grenade is sewn to the direct front. A black adjustable chin strap is held in place by a pair of 1cm diameter brass buttons. The interior is lined in black rayon/silk with a black leather sweatband of which part has come apart, but is included. The interior is manufacture marked, as well as size marked for "58". The white cotton cover shows typical wear with staining and discolouration. It fits snugly to the kepi.

2. An un-issued, khaki coloured M1931 tropical tunic with a nine domed, stamped alloy, fire gilt type buttons with "Legion Etrangere" to the borders. Each are affixed via rings. The pointed, lay down collars have three metal "female" snaps sewn to each collar. The interior is unlined with no apparent markings. No belt hooks are present . Warrant officer rank insignia is above each sleeve. The chest measures approximately 36". The matching tropical breeches have a three button French fly with an additional button at the waist, slanted hip pockets, rear button slash pockets and an adjustment waist strap with double pin buckle. A tag sewn under the strap has the handwritten name of the owner and a date of 1934. The waist measures approximately 29" with an inseam of 26". They do not appear to have been worn.

3. The M1935 mess kit is a two piece natural aluminum kit that measures approximately 15.5cm tall x 15.5cm wide and 9cm deep. Its cover, which has a stepped bottom and a raised lip around its edge, also has an aluminum wire handle fed through a riveted loop to one of its sides. The handle vertically descends the full height of the mess tin and then wraps under its base. With the cover off, this handle extends horizontally. An indentation is to the lip opposite the handle, evidently to facilitate pouring. The internal plate is missing. The body of the mess kit itself has an aluminum wire handle wrapped around the raised studs riveted to either of its sides. The handle has a deliberate bend to its center section, which would normally be positioned underneath the kit, but when swiveled above it, can suspend it for cooking over an open fire. Stamped to the bottom of the kit is the manufacture name and mark. The expected surface scratches and minor indentations are evident.

4. A M31 gasmask carrier with M1933 TC-38 gas mask. The khaki webbed bag measuring approximately 29cm x 27cm x 8cm with a pocket to each side that would hold an anti-dimming stick. A single flap with leather strap is to the front. It is complete with waist sling straps and shoulder strap. The inside is divided into two sections, with one section having a metal insert to contain the gasmask canister. A small pocket to the rear panel holds a spare pair of lenses. The inside cover is maker marked. The face of the gas mask has dried, but the retaining straps are in good condition.
