BACKGROUND: All medical personnel were an extremely valuable asset during both wars. Medical personnel worked overseas in military hospitals and casualty clearing stations. The "nursing sisters" were accorded the rank of lieutenant during WWI. One of the innovations of the WWI Medical Service was the use of the hospital ship that was used to evacuate the sick and wounded back to Canada. These ships were also subject to enemy attack.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: A stamped badge is approximately 2.5cm x 3.5 cm which consists of the Rod of Aesculapius (a serpent entwined about a rod) surrounded by a wreath of maple leaves to whose base is a scroll with the inscription "Canadian Medical Corps" all surmounted by a Kings crown. The reverse is a mirror image of the front with lugs, of which the top one is misshapen.
