C011994 "ROYAL WINNIPEG RIFLES" CAP BADGE.
BACKGROUND: The R.W.R. (Royal Winnipeg Rifles) was formed in 1883 using the Latin motto "Hosti Acie Nominati" (named by the enemy in battle). A captured Metis during the Northwest Rebellion of 1885 asked "The red coats we know, but who are those little black devils?" Infantry of the line usually wore red coats, while Rifle units wore dark green - almost black - coats. During WWII the R.W.R. was one of the first Allied troop on the beaches on D-Day to suppress German fire.
