C010094 BRITISH/CANADIAN M1888 BAYONET WITH OLIVER PATTERN FROG..

A pattern 1888 bayonet with leather Oliver pattern frog. The unsheathed bayonet has an overall length of 42.5cm with a 30.5cm long blade. Its contoured bird’s head pommel has a stud guide that is marked "6DCOR" for the 6th Regiment Duke of Connaught’s Own Rifle. The age-darkened, scratched and lightly pitted, contoured wooden grips are fixed with two large rivets and a cleaning hole drilled through it. The contoured metal cross guard has a circular muzzle guide to its upper extension. Its blade has wide fullers extending most of its length. To the ricasso is stamped the War Department acceptance mark used by the British government, bending mark and a Crown over "S" that is the Soligen maker mark. The reverse ricasso is stamped "Sanderson Scheffield". The blade is bright with light surface spotting. The Mk l scabbard, which is 32cm long, is comprised of thick, blackened leather, whose vertical seam is to its reverse, with contoured metal fittings to its top and bottom. The fitting to the top has a staple securing its mouthpiece, to the body of the scabbard, to both the obverse and reverse. An oval lug is to its obverse center. The bottom fitting also has securing staples, but near its scalloped top, obverse and reverse, and it tapers to its rounded base. This fitting is loose. The leather body of the scabbard shows light scratching & chafing. The frog stud is marked "582". The brown leather frog is maker marked to "H. Carson Maker Ottawa".
