C009990 1ST POLISH ARMOURED DIVISION UNIFORM GROUPING.
BACKGROUND:
The 1st Polish Armoured Division (or Polish 1 Dywizja Pancerna) was active from 1942-1947 that was originally formed at Duns in Scotland in February 1942. They were also known as the Black Division or the Black Devils. When formed, they guarded 200 kms of British coast as part of the 1 Polish Corps. In 1944 the Division was transferred to Normandy and was attached to the First Canadian Army. They saw action during the Battle of Falaise and they Battle of Breda.PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: This grouping consists of a beret, tunic, trousers, collar liner, neck tie and handwritten letter.
1. A one piece, black wool beret with a Polish eagle badge, as well as a rank stripe for Lance Corporal is sewn to the front. A pair of black painted metal grommets are under the right side. The interior is lined in black cotton with a sewn diamond pattern. Light ink stamp is visible that includes a broad arrow. A size 58 beret.
2. A khaki wool battledress tunic with a three button fly front closure, and a lay-down collar with insignia. A metal eyelet and hooks are present to the neck. There are two pleated patch breast pockets, whose scalloped flaps have hidden button closures. A "wound badge" with single star is attached above the left hand pocket. The integral shoulder straps (the left one being black that represents the 1st Armoured Division) are buttoned near the neck and bear the rank stripes of Corporal. To each shoulder are "Poland" shoulder flashes of red.,All buttons are complete with a Polish eagle to them and appear to have original stitching. An integral belt, with a nickel-silver buckle and vertical retaining loop on its opposite side, is to the waistband. The back has multiple pleats. The interior is partially lined in khaki cotton, and has two vertical slash breast pockets. Also marked "Battle Dress," as well as faint markings that include "Size No. 16".
3. The straight leg trousers have a five button French fly with an additional button to the waist. There are five of the original six buttons to the interior of the waistband for the attachment of suspenders, as well as two buttons to the exterior of the waistband for the attachment of the tunic. The button directly at the waist is loose. A vertical slash pocket is to each hip, as well as a button flap pocket to the rear. The waist measures approximately 33" with a 31" inseam.
4. The last items is a 44cm long x 7.5cm wide cotton collar liner that is stamped and a wool neck tie that has a manufacture tag and measures approximately 132cm or 48" long. There is a tear to present to the neck tie.
