C008283 BRITISH WWI BRASS PRINCESS MARY CHRISTMAS BOX.
BACKGROUND:
In November 1914, the "Sailors and Soldiers Christmas Fund", created by the 17 year old Princess Mary (daughter of King George V and Queen Mary), placed an advertisement asking for monetary contributions to provide all British Forces personnel "gift from the nation" on Christmas Day 1914. Due to overwhelming response, it was decided to spend the money on an embossed brass box designed by Messrs. Adhead & Ramsey. Included in the boxes were chocolate, note paper, a bullet-shaped pencil, cigarettes or spices (for the Indian troops). Each person eventually received this gift on Christmas Day 1914 although orders were still being filled in 1916. Those who were P.O.W.’s did not receive their boxes until 1918.PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: A brass embossed, hinged box measuring approximately 13cm x 19cm x 3cm. The top features the profile of Princess Mary within a laurel wreath with the monogram "M M". The box is also marked with Japan, Russia, Montenegro, Serbia, France and Belgium along with Imperium Britannicum to the top. "Christmas 1914" is to the bottom.
