C007894 U.S. M4 KNIFE/BAYONET & SCABBARD.
BACKGROUND: The M-4 bayonet was designed for use with the M-1 Carbine and was very similar to the US M3 Combat/Trench Knife. It could be utilized as a fighting knife or as a bayonet and was used during WWII and the Korean conflict.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: A blued fighting knife/bayonet and scabbard with an integral frog. The knife has a metal pommel with a locking mechanism. The unmarked blade measures approximately 17cm in length. Its horizontally ribbed, brown leather grip is age darkened as expected. Its blued metal double cross guard has a muzzle ring to its upper extension. The 19cm scabbard has a metal throat with downwardly-angled projections to either side, and to whose obverse is stamped "U.S. M8A1" and "PWH". A vertical projection extends from the back of the throat, to which the 14cm tall olive drab canvas frog is doubly riveted. The frog has a horizontal retaining strap riveted to the upper portion of its formed belt loop, with metal tips to either end of the strap and a brass snap button. At the very top of the frog is small loop with a shaped wire belt hook. The olive drab-colored bakelite scabbard itself tapers at its tip where there is a hole for a tie string. String is included.
