A black wool bonnet comprised of a red coloured wool Touri (pom pom) to its center, with a diced body of white, red and dark green. To the rear seam are a pair of black silk/rayon swallow tails that measure approximately 25cm in length. The edge of the body is trimmed in black silk/rayon. Attached to the left side of the balmoral is a badge for the Transvaal 8th Infantry Scottish that sits on a square section of Murray of Atholl tartan. The badge shows a Scottish thistle on a scroll bearing the motto Alba nam Buadh (Gaelic for "Well done, Scotland" or "Scotland, home of the virtues") that is surrounded by a heraldic strap and buckle bearing the regiment's name, all on the Star of the Order of the Thistle. This badge was worn from 1939-1945. A pair of screw posts are to the reverse of the badge, but no screw caps. The interior is fully lined, with the only marking being a handwritten "54".
