C002695 THE BLACK WATCH, ROYAL HIGHLAND REGIMENT OF CANADA OFFICER GLENGARRY.
BACKGROUND: The Glengarry’s origins may be traced to Alasdair MacDonell (1771 1828) of Glengarry, Scotland, and was adopted by the British Infantry in 1868, and the Canadian militia in the 1870s. It was worn on dress occasions, by traditionally Scottish Infantry Regiments, during both world wars. Mobilized at the beginning of the war, the Seaforth Highlanders served in Italy from 1943 to 1945 (as part of the 2nd Infantry Brigade of the 1st Infantry Division), and in North West Europe from March of 1945 until the end of hostilities.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: A black woven wool "wedge" cap has a red wool Touri (pom pom) to its crown, black rayon edging along its base, and dual black rayon ribbons, with swallow tail cut ends, extend from its reverse. A large Officer’s cap badge for “The Black Watch, Royal Highland Regiment of Canada” is affixed via lugs and cotter pin over the left front. The interior of the Glengarry is lined in black rayon.
