C000996 BRITISH/CANADIAN PATTERN 1888 MK1 TYPE 2
BAYONET AND SCABBARD.
Its contoured bird’s head pommel has a stud guide and stud, and a cleaning hole drilled straight through it. The age
darkened, contoured wooden grips are fixed with two screws. The contoured metal cross guard has a circular muzzle guide to its upper extension. Its 30.5cm (12") blade has wide fullers extending most of its length. The front ricasso is stamped with a Queen Victoria crown with markings (V.R.), as well as “3" and “96", and “Wilkinson London”. The opposite side of the ricasso is “Crown/35/W” marked, as well as being War Department and broad arrow marked and bend proof marked . The flat edge of the ricasso is also marked with a crown with Crown/35/W” . The blade shows typical wear with some surface scratching that is due to the insertion into the scabbard. The scabbard, which is 32cm long, is comprised of thick, blackened leather, whose vertical seam is to its reverse, with contoured metal fittings to its top and bottom. The fitting to the top has three rivets near and securing its mouthpiece, and, near its base, a staple fixing it to the body of the scabbard, obverse and reverse. The frog stud is present and marked "47/97". The bottom fitting also has securing staples, but near its scalloped top, obverse and reverse, and it tapers to its rounded base. The black leather body of the scabbard shows light scratching & chafing. There is some embossment to the leather, but hard to discern the details. Overall the bayonet and scabbard measure approximately 44cm in length.
