C000394 MEMORIAL PLAQUE/GROUPING.

A bronze,12cm diameter, round plaque that has a relief of a lion in front of Britannia who holds laurel leaves with her left hand. She is wearing a classic war helmet. The inscription surrounding and framing the plaque states; He died for Freedom and Honor. In a rectangle on the right side the name of the gentlemen is engraved. In this case it is "George Joseph Wilkins". There are flower details, as well as, dolphins. The designers initials of "E. CR.P" for Edward Carter Preston appear above the right paw of the lion. The number "35" is in front of the rear leg. The plaque sits in a 18cm diameter wood and plaster frame with the original backing and hanging wire to the reverse. Of Note: The plaques "were initially made at the Memorial Plaque Factory, 54/56 Church Road, Acton, W3, London[2] from 1919. Early Acton-made plaques did not have a number stamped on them but later ones have a number stamped behind the lion's back leg (Wiki). Included is a binder with photographs, newspaper clippings, pay book, card with photograph and details of the grave of Mr. Wilkins, accompanying letter for the plaque and a booklet titled "The War Graves of the British Empire; Villers Station Cemetery, Villers-Au Bois, France"." Mr. Wilkins served as a Gunner in the 1st Canadian Heavy Battery C.F.A. He "died of his wounds" on "15-6-17". Of Note: Gunner Joseph Wilkins. Born London, England 14 Oct 1896; automobile fitter; 41st Regiment; #348616; 45th Battery, 9th Brigade, Canadian Field Artillery, CEF; 1st Heavy Battery, Canadian Field Artillery, CEF; died of wounds 15 Jun 1917; age 20; interred Villers Station Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France; grave 10,C,14.
