C028976 U.S. KOREAN WAR VINTAGE 508TH PARACHUTE INFANTRY REGIMENT BADGE.

BACKGROUND: The 508th PIR (or Red Devils) were a regiment of the 82nd Airborne Division. Activated on October 20, 1942, with extensive training, sailed from New York on December 28, 1943 for Northern Ireland. The unit took part in "Operation Overload" by jumping into Normandy on June 6, 1944 at 2:15 a.m. They, along with others, were dropped in the wrong location and had difficulty linking up with the 502nd Infantry Regiment. Of the 2056 troops who participated in D-Day landings, only 995 returned. The regiment suffered 1061 casualties of which 307 were killed in action.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: A circular cotton badge measuring approximately 7.5cm in diameter with a black thread border and a central "Red Devil" suspended from a white parachute, boots and rifle.
