L014279 CIVIL GLIDING CLASS "A" PROFICIENCY BADGE. (Segelflieger-Abzeichen)

BACKGROUND: The International Aeronautical Federation, a pre-WWII organization, awarded a series of proficiency badges to glider pilots on their successful completion of the appropriate tests and gliding trials. Originally, these awards were constructed of alloy with enamel work, however, in 1933, the German civil glider clubs introduced a cloth version to be worn on the left breast. The "C" class certificate was awarded for the completion of a five minute solo flight without loss of altitude.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: An "A" class gliding proficiency badge, comprised of a circular border to one machine embroidered "gull," in silver grey thread, on a 50mm diameter, blue-grey wool base.
