L014260 PERSONNEL'S HEAT RESISTANT PROTECTIVE MITTENS. (Wärme Widerstandsfähig Schützend Handschuhe)

BACKGROUND: The Luftwaffe, (Air-{Weapon}, Force), utilized a wide variety of assorted gloves, gauntlets and mittens intended for different purposes that included the standard grey suede gloves for Officers and NCO’s, blue/grey knit gloves for enlisted personnel, reversible and non-reversible, padded winter mittens as well as specialized gauntlets for motorcycle and paratroop personnel and specialized gloves and gauntlets for ground and aircrew personnel including electrically heated models. Besides the above models there were also additional assorted protective garments that included gloves, gauntlets and mittens that were classified as Sonderbekleidung, (Special Clothing). The protective garments were only issued to personnel when engaged in specific functions and were to be returned to a units stores for reissued as required although it appears the order was not strictly adhered to. The protective garments were utilized by a variety of personnel including motorcyclists, armoured vehicle personnel and Anti-Aircraft Artillery personnel. These particular mittens appear to be intended for personnel required to handle hot items.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Heavy, woven, field-grey canvas construction, mittens with dual-ply canvas backs and palms and thumb panels all with machine stitched seams. The mittens have, short, single-ply cuffs with a small, extended blackened leather tab machine stitched to each, with one tab having a cut-out button eyelet and the other tab with a black painted, magnetic sheet metal, button/stud, designed to secure the mittens together when not in use. The exterior, palm side cuff of each mitten is well marked with the black inkstamped initials, "RLM", indicating, Reichs Luftfahrt Ministerium, (National Ministry of Aviation) and the interior cuff of each mitten is also well marked with the black inkstamped manufacturer’s name, location and date, "P. Rüdel Oberkotzau 1942", and the size, "Gr. III", presumably indicating small. The mittens are in overall very good condition with light to moderate age and usage toning that appears to include some heat induced brownish discoloration to the palms. Seldom encountered protective mittens.
