L009993 PARATROOPER TEST UNIT DOG TAG WITH ORIGINAL POUCH.

Extremely rare steel dog tag on its original thick cord in original chamois pouch with hand-embroidered traditional figures and words "Gluck Auf" ("Good Luck"). Steel identity tag is stamped 202218 / 33, an identified paratrooper unit designated as Erprobungsstaffel Langendiebach b/Hanau/XI. Flieger Korps. The XI. Flieger Korps was the code name at the beginning of the war for the Corps commanding all paratrooper units. This unit, the "Testing Squadron" for the Parachute Corps, was the unit which tested all methods and equipment for parachute drops, such as experimental techniques for jumping with weapons and new equipment such as the FG42 parachute assault rifle. The men of the unit were all experienced paratroopers with over 100 parachute jumps who were qualified to test potentially dangerous new parachuting methods and experimental equipment. This unit developed the RZ16 and RZ20 parachutes after the problems with the RZ1 parachute and harness in mass drops were identified. The / 33 on the tag indicates the man who carried this was the 33 original member of the unit. The chamois pouch is hand made with considerable skill, and was perhaps made for the paratrooper by a wife or girlfriend, as it does not appear to be a commercially produced item. Very rare and historical unit dog tag.
