L009776 FEMALE SIGNALS AUXILIARY OBERHELFERIN'S RANK CHEVRON. (Dienstgradabzeichen)

BACKGROUND: Although the Luftwaffe had utilized civilian female employees in secretarial and clerical positions it was contrary to the NSDAP’s, Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei, (National Socialist German Worker’s Party), views on women to draft them into active military service roles. As the war progressed and additional manpower was needed at the front more and more women were recruited into service, albeit still retaining their civilian status. Besides the secretarial and clerical positions female civilians were also employed as Flugmeldedienstpersonel, (Aircraft Reporting Service), personnel that were tasked with operating assorted aircraft visual and sound detection equipment, and radar stations to warn of incoming enemy aircraft. On February 26TH 1941the Luftwaffe constituted the Luftnachrichten Helferinnenschaft, (Corps of Women Signals Auxiliaries), which incorporated the Flugmeldedienstpersonel and were tasked with aircraft warning and communication services. The Flugmeldedienst and Luftnachrichten Helferinnenschaft personnel were outfitted with uniforms on June 11TH 1940 and on July 28TH 1941 a specific series of sleeve rank chevrons were introduced. The chevrons were to be worn on the upper left sleeve of the service jacket, greatcoat and work smocks. Of Note: By June 1944 with ever increasing manpower shortages females between eighteen and forty began to be drafted into military service roles. Also of note: The female auxiliary rank of Oberhelferin is the equivalent to the armed forces rank of Gefreiter.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: The Oberhelferin’s rank insignia consists of dual, narrow, machine woven, bright silver/aluminum, waffle patterned, chevrons, machine stitched on a roughly, 50mm tall, 100mm wide, slightly mottled, horizontally rectangular, Luftwaffe blue/grey wool base. The reverse of the wool base has a glued on, circular, piece of white paper with illegible handwritten script and numerals. The insignia is in overall excellent, unissued condition with minimal age toning. Scarce female auxiliary’s rank insignia.
