L009293 KNIGHT'S CROSS WINNER "GENERAL ERNST BUFFA" P.O.W. KEEPSAKE BOX.
Ernst Buffa (14 February 1893 – 19 September 1971) was a general in the Luftwaffe of Nazi Germany during World War II. Son of Franz Freiherr Buffa von Lilienberg und Castellalt, Baron of the Holy Roman Empire, he enlisted in the German army in 1912. He entered the Military Academy of Berlin in May 1916. During World War I he was sent to the Western Front. He was also a recipient of the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross. (Wiki)
A 7.5cm x17cm x 22cm grey painted, wooden box with hinged lid. Painted to the lid are the words "ERSATZTEILE FÜR ERNST BUFFA" OR "SPARE PARTS FOR ERNST BUFFA" along with a Luftwaffe eagle decal. To the interior of the box is lined in a section of splinter pattern camouflage. Included are four pages of "Prisoner of War" letterhead that are dated for 1943. A section of typewritten paper is glued along the bottom edge of the lid that reads "General Buffa’s keepsake box made for him by his men. Given to me upon his release 1947." Of Note: Ernst Buffa was in American captivity from 7th May 1945 until 5th June 1947.
