L008992 PARATROOPER ASSAULT RATION CAN.
Blue painted metal tin marked Dose f. Absprungverpflegung (Parachute Jump Ration) on the bottom with the Luftwaffe contract information beneath as depicted and discussed on pages 35-6 of the reference book Rations of the German Wehrmacht in World War II Volume 2 by Jim Pool. In German an emergency parachute jump from a disabled aircraft is a Notsprung (literally "Emergency Jump.") A deliberate, intentional parachute jump which the man intended to make when he boarded the aircraft is an Absprung, As discussed in the reference book, if this were an emergency ration for pilots bailing out of damaged aircraft, is would be labeled Notsprungverpflegung ("emergency jump ration"). These paratrooper ration cans are very rare. This one is in excellent condition with no rust, and is complete with the small cotton canvas pull tab on the opening mechanism. It appears some sort of thick fluid was spilled on it at some point, but I have not attempted to clean it. Only the third one I’ve had in 40 years. The container measures approximately 3cm x 10.5cm x 13cm.
