L007794 WW2 GERMAN SQUADRON ARTWORK.
WW2 German Squadron Artwork. A painting of (and possibly the original design for) the squadron insignia (Staffelwappen) of Luftwaffe (F) Aufklärungsgruppe 11 (No. 4 Squadron of the 11th (Long Range) Reconnaissance Group) The painting on silk or soft cotton was hand painted by Leutnant Kuhn.
(Fern or long range) Aufklärungsgruppe 11 was a Luftwaffe air reconnaissance group that fought throughout the war, and was home based in Großenhain prior to World War II. It was made up of a Gruppenstab (headquarters staff unit) and five Staffeln (squadrons). During the invasion of Poland, the 4. Squadron flew reconnaissance missions for 4th Army in northern Poland. In 1941 during Operation Barbarossa 4.(F)/11 was deployed over the combat area of 9th Army which was part of Army Group Center. It fought all the way through the war.
The complete unit history can be found here: https://luftwaffedata.co.uk/index.php/4.(F)/11
The original hand painted artwork by Leutnant Kuhn measures approximately 8" x 11." Accompanying the artwork is the original Christmas card given to Kuhn by Squadron commander Hauptmann Ulrich Hoffmann (c. 1 Sep 39 Mar 41) for Christmas 1940. There is a piece of paper pinned to the artwork which suggests the artwork was created in 1943. A rare and exceptional piece of original Luftwaffe squadron art, possibly created as the specimen for the unit insignia which was painted on all squadron aircraft.
