L007592 GENERALLEUTNANT SLEEVE RANK INSIGNIA.

BACKGROUND: The Deutscher Luftsportsverband, (German Air Sports Association), the clandestine, civilian forerunner of the Luftwaffe contained the Fliegerschaft, (Pilot Base), under control of the RLM, Reichsluftfahrtministerium (National Ministry of Aviation). The Fliegerschaft personnel formed the clandestine core of the newly forming Luftwaffe. As early as January 1934 the Fliegerschaft utilized a system of rank insignia for garments that normally would not have any rank insignia such as protective flight suits and coats, work and drill uniforms etc. After the official formation of the Luftwaffe on February 26TH 1935 a new system of rank insignia for garments that normally would not have any rank insignia was introduced on May 27TH 1935. The rank insignia for garments that normally would not have any rank insignia was altered again as per regulations of December 19TH 1935. Originally the December 1935 pattern insignia was worn on both upper sleeves of the appropriate garments but regulations of August 4TH 1942 restricted wear to the upper left sleeve as a cost saving measure. The December 1935 insignia came in a series of horizontal white "wings" and bars for the ranks of Unteroffizier through to the rank of Oberst and a series of golden yellow "wings" and bars for the ranks of Generalmajor through to Reichsmarschall. The December 1935 pattern of rank insignia remained in usage through-out the war.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: The insignia consists of a horizontally rectangular, deep navy blue wool base with two, cut-out, stylized, scalloped, horizontal gold wool "wings" machine stitched in place overtop a single rank bar. The "wings" each have a roughly, 10cm wide wingspan. Generalleutnant rank.
