L006495 OFFICER'S CAPE EAGLE. (Umhang Adler)
BACKGROUND: The Officer’s cape, (or cloak), was an optional, private purchase, item of dress permitted for wear by all Officer ranks when regulations didn’t prescribe a certain order of dress. The cape was manufactured in a high quality Luftwaffe blue/grey fabric and also came in a rubberized version. In December 1938 a Luftwaffe national eagle was introduced for wear on the cape and regulations dictated that by January 1ST 1940 all capes, excluding the rubberised version, were to have the eagle applied. The eagle was to be applied to the upper left shoulder portion of the cape with the eagle facing forward. Manufacture of the Officer’s cape was discontinued after the start of the war.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: High quality, nicely detailed, large, hand embroidered, second pattern Luftwaffe eagle in silver/grey threads with bright silver/aluminum bullion accents on a cut out Luftwaffe blue/grey wool base. Eagle’s wingspan from tip to tip is roughly 18.5cm. The silver/aluminum bullion accents are featured on the eagles wings, tail feathers, beak and talons and as an outer border to the swastika. Reverse retains remnants of its natural tan protective paper backing and black fabric backing is fully intact. Eagle shows age toning. Scarce eagle.
