BACKGROUND: Formed in late 1932 the Deutscher Luftschutzverband (German Air Protection League), was a voluntary organization designed to provide civil air raid protection in large civilian centers. Shortly after Hitler ascension to power the Deutscher Luftschutzverband was restructured and placed under the supervision of the Reichsluftfahrtministerium, (National Ministry of Aviation), under the control of Hermann Göring. On April 29TH 1933 the Deutscher Luftschutzverband was renamed RLB, Reichs Luftschutz Bund, (National Air Raid Protection League) and was given status as an official national organization tasked with all aspects of civil air raid defence. The RLB remained a voluntary organization with a small cadre of paid, full-time uniformed officials to oversee the organizations functions until June 1935 when obligatory service was introduced. One of the aspects of civil air raid defence was immediate medical attention to air raid victims which the RLB assisted the DRK, Deutsche Rote Kreuz, (German Red Cross) with. As a result some RLB personnel were trained as medical orderlies and stretcher bearers and were issued with medical pouches equipped with basic medical supplies to be worn on the load carrying waist belt.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Roughly, 11.5cm tall, 20cm wide, 11.5cm deep, molded, light brown leather construction medical pouch with a slightly curved reverse and steel and alloy fittings. The top of the pouch has a fold back lid with a machine stitched leather hinge to the obverse and a vertical leather closure strap, with a cut-out eyelet, to each side which attached to extended alloy studs positioned on each side of the pouch’s body. The reverse of the pouch has two, stitched and rivetted on, vertical, leather belt loops with corresponding, rivetted on, horizontal retaining loops. The belt loops also have a cut-out eyelet and attached to the alloy studs positioned on the bottom edge of the pouch’s body. The interior top lid has its original white paper contents label. Nice clean example.
