BACKGROUND: Basic human instinct dictates that soldiers in the field, regardless of nationality, long for their loved ones at home. As a result it was very common for these soldiers to purchase, or appropriate, "sweetheart" items and send them home. Although there was almost an unlimited selection of "sweetheart" items one of the most popular items were the photograph postcards which were relatively inexpensive, easily mailed and distinctly personal.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Roughly, 5 1/2" x 3 5/8", mid-weight cardstock postcard with a black and white, sepia toned, printed photograph featuring a young Luftwaffe Unteroffizier wearing a visor cap and flight blouse gazing into the face of his sweetheart. The visible uniform details include the cap insignia, partial shoulder strap, collar tabs and tress and a Flight personnel’s sleeve badge. The bottom edge of the postcard has a black printed caption, "Krone des Lebens, Glück ohne Ruh, Liebe bist Du!", (Crown of my life, Happiness without pause, You are love!). the reverse of the postcard has handwritten script, and a postage stamp with a cancellation inkstamp with the date that appears to be, "7 40". The postcard is in overall good condition with light age yellowing.
