L003590 MG34 SADDLE DRUMS. (Patronentrommel 34)

Sheet metal and tooled steel construction ammo drums, consisting of two circular canisters joined at the top. Canisters have corrugated sides for extra strength and are roughly 4 1/4" diameter each. Top central portion with spring loaded clip to attach drums to MG. Black leather carrying handle affixed by two metal bars to drum tops. Bottom of central portion has an opening for loading and dispensing the 7.92mm rounds. Nickel/silver plated dummy beginning rounds are still in place. Drums required a special tool to load the seventy-five round belts. Belts would attach to dummy round and the tool would be used to turn a prong at the center of each drum. One drum has small oval viewing ports, numbered respectively "75", "50", "25", and "0", to monitor ammo usage. Drums well marked, "D.T. 15Nr. zz 916 Fl.46300". Remnants of field-grey paint are just visible and drums show moderate to heavy surface spotting. Of note: A special receiver cover had to be fitted on the MG to facilitate use of these drums, and their use was suspended in 1940.
