L003195 OFFICER’S GLOVES.

BACKGROUND: The Reichsluftwaffe, (National Air {Weapon}, Force), was official established on February 26TH 1935 as the third branch of service of the Armed Forces. On March 9TH 1935 the formation of the new Reichsluftwaffe was announced to the foreign press and on March 16TH conscription was reintroduced for all three branches of service. On May 21ST 1935 the Reichsluftwaffe designation was altered to Luftwaffe, (Air {Weapon}, Force). Like the other branches of military service Luftwaffe regulations instituted a least twelve forms of uniform dress with the commanding officer dictating the form to be worn depending on the particular function and or circumstance that the troops were engaged in, theoretically to give a uniform appearance for all personnel. The dress regulations included the Service dress, the Undress uniform, the Reporting dress, the Parade dress, the Walking Out dress and both Informal day and evening dress, all of which required the wear of gloves as per regulations. Officer’s and NCO’s ranks utilized blue/grey or grey suede or leather gloves while enlisted ranks wore knitted grey gloves with most forms of dress although Officer’s wore white gloves with the Informal dress. Originally the suede/leather gloves for Officers and NCO’s were to be grey until regulations of 1936 specified blue/grey as the official color although the difference was so subtle as to be unnoticeable. Originally the the suede/leather gloves for Officers and NCO’s were produced with internal seams until regulations of mid 1940, dictated the seams were to be applied externally for ease of production and repair. The suede/leather gloves for Officers and NCO’s were also manufactured with fur or wool lining as an optional winter wear item. Officers and certain senior NCO ranks were responsible for purchasing their own uniforms, including the suede/leather gloves, and as a result were allotted a clothing allowance through the Luftwaffe’s Verkaufsabteilung, (Air Force Sales Department), system. The Officers and certain senior NCO’s could choose to purchase their uniforms from the armed forces clothing depots or to privately purchase uniform items of higher quality.
