L000596 PARATROOPER/ASSAULT TROOP'S GRENADE BAGS. (Fallschirmjäger/Sturmtrupp Handgranatenbeutel) 

BACKGROUND: Special hand grenade bags were developed in September 1939 and were designed for use by Paratroopers, Shock troops and Assault engineers. The bags allowed these specialized personnel to carry more then the regular complement of grenades as required in assault situations. The bags were issued in pairs with each bag accommodating five M24, M39 or M43 grenades each, for a total of ten grenades. 

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Factory made, olive drab, woven canvas construction hand grenade bags are roughly 18 1/2" tall and 8 3/4" wide each and are joined together by two 1" wide, 20" long, khaki web straps. Straps are inserted and stitched through the bags side seams, with one strap situated near the top edge and the other strap near bottom edge. Top of each bag has a cream colored, molded bakelite, "Ri Ri", zipper closure. Both zippers still function. Interior of one bag has a burgundy RB number inkstamp. Of Note: The RB numbers, Reichsbetriebnummer, (National factory code numbers), were introduced in late 1942 and were intended to replace the manufacturers marks on garments and equipment to conceal the manufactures name and location from the allies, to prevent bombing raids on German industrial factories. Both bags are in overall excellent unissued condition with no damage. Scarce Luftwaffe assault accessory.
