A wartime black and white photograph postcard of Korvettenkapitän Günther Prien. Glue spots to the reverse indicating it was most probably in a scrap book at some point. Of Note: Korvettenkapitän Günther Prien was the commander of the successful U-47. On October 13TH 1939 Prien set out in the U-47 in an attempt to attack the anchored British fleet harbored at Scapa Flow in the Orkney Islands and successfully managed to sink the English battleship Royal Oak and escape resulting in him personally being awarded the Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross by Hitler on October 18TH 1939. Prien continued with his success and was the fourth highest scoring U-Boat ace credited with sinking 195,000 tonnes of allied shipping resulting in him being the fifth recipient of the Oak-leaves to the Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross on October 20TH 1940. Prien’s luck ran out on March 7TH 1941 when attacking a convoy off the Faroe Islands the U-47 was sunk with a loss of all hands.
