K003195 “S.Y. GRILLE” SAILOR’S CAP.
A WW2 (immediate postwar) Sailor’s Cap for Hitler’s yacht, the Aviso (corvette or frigate) Grille. During WW2, Hitler’s personal yacht was the aviso (corvette or frigate class ship) Grille. After WW2, the Grille was seized by Great Britain for war reparations and sold in 1946 to a Lebanese businessman who intended to operate it as a luxury liner and tourist attraction in the Mediterranean. In 1946, the Grille was crewed up with British sailors and sailed to Beirut, Lebanon to be refitted and overhauled. This sailor’s cap, with a Lebanese maker’s label, was made in 1946 in Beirut (Beyrouth) for the crewmen of the ship. The label states Fabrique Libanaise (French for “Made in Lebanon.” French was the lingua franca in Lebanon since before WWI). The midnight blue wool cap in the classic old time sailor’s style bears ship’s name S.Y. (Steam Yacht) Grille in bullion. Silk lining, chincord intact, with paper label at back of sweatband with the size and illegible crewman’s name. A rare maritime artifact of the immediate postwar period and the curious fate of Hitler’s yacht. The Grille was eventually scrapped in New York in 1949.
