BACKGROUND: The Kriegsmarine adopted wear of the new national eagle on the front of the headgear and the right breast of the uniform on March 24TH 1934. The navy blue overseas cap was originally introduced on November 10TH 1938 and designated, Gefechtsmütze (Battle cap), this early pattern cap was restricted for wear on ships by certain specific personnel. On October 7TH 1939 the cap underwent minor modifications, was re-designated, Bordmütze, (Board cap), and became a regular issue item for wear by all personnel both on and off ship.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Hand embroidered national eagle in golden yellow cotton threads on a cut-out, navy blue wool base. Scarce.
