BACKGROUND: In the mid-1920's the original German national signal pennants were replaced by the International signal pennants and flags. The International flag code consist of a group of forty-two flags and pennants with a flag representing each letter of the alphabet, (in English), pennants for each numeral from zero to nine, four substitute or repeater pennants a code pennant and an answering pennant. The flags and pennants are accompanied by a code book and "hoisted" in a series of one to five flags/pennants to relay specific messages. Warships also carry the code and answering pennants to indicate they are not using secret codes.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: The horizontally trapezoidal pennant is roughly, 66cm tall at the hoist end, 228cm long. Orange/red/orange combination for the number "0" (Zero). Pennant has two rows of reinforcement stitching to top and bottom edges and eight rows of vertical reinforcement stitching to squared off fly end. Hoist end has white cotton bunting with tunnel looped suspension rope. Suspension rope has a steel, swivel suspension clip to top corner and a fixed steel clip to bottom corner. Bunting is well marked with a black ink stamped Eagle over "M".
