J012758 (IJA) CASED 4 X 10 FIELD BINOCULARS.

Cased, cast alloy binoculars, whose body is finished in a black, rough textured coating, with a black bakelite adjusting knob and eye cups. Beneath each of the eye cups is a collar whose extensions are connected to one another at a central post, to whose base is the adjusting focus knob. The surface of the left extension is embossed with the manufacturer’s logo, beneath which is "J.E.S." (Japanese Engineering Standard) followed by two kanji characters, and another character is stamped beneath that, no doubt an inspection mark. To the surface of the right extension is embossed "4 x (indicating the power) 10" (being the field of view in degrees), as well as gradations from "60" to "70" to the right of the center post’s dial, for adjusting the eye width. The dial has "No. 63513" stamped to it. Through the 7/16" diameter, right ocular lens may be seen a reticle pattern, graded for + and - 25 degrees along its vertical axis, and + and - 40 degrees along its horizontal. This is also visible, in reverse, to the 1 5/8" diameter, right objective lens. Unfortunately, the right ocular lens has a horizontal crack along its mid-point, making the upper half of the view through that lens consistently fogged. This is not, of course, as noticeable when looking through both lenses. The textured coating to the left housing has worn to its underside near the ocular lens, and to its top near the objective lens. Most of the paint along the edges of the collar above both housings has worn. Its case is made of rubberized, olive drab canvas, 4 1/2" in overall height, 5 1/4" wide at its top tapering to 4 3/4" at its base, and approximately 2 1/4" deep. Its stiff cover is triply rivetted along its reverse edge to a 2 1/4" wide belt loop, also of rubberized canvas, which is itself triply rivetted to the reverse base of the case. The forward edge of the lid has a semi-circular, triply rivetted plate to it, unto the metal loop to whose base is wrapped and sewn a brown leather tab, to whose widening center is a brass stud hole surround. This stud hole mates with the brass stud the front of the body of the case. Two horizontal leather loops are each doubly rivetted to either side of the case, for an, absent, hanging strap. The interior lid of the case is lined in padded canvas. Moderate chafe wear may be seen to its exterior, mostly to the edges of its lid, and all of its metal elements are heavily surface spotted.
