J008057 CASED 1936 HOME DEFENCE FIRE UNIT COMMEMORATIVE BADGE.
A 1 3/16" wide and 1 9/16" tall, oval-shaped badge, of silver-colored alloy, in its original, wooden presentation case. The slightly convex badge features, against its pebbled background, a three-armed symbol enclosed by an open-toped wreath of cherry blossoms and leaves, with a bow to their base. Light age darkening is evident to its recesses, but it is otherwise very bright. To the reverse is, to the top, a hinged, dual pin and, to the bottom, a catch assembly, between which are embossed three rows of stylized kanji characters, the middle row, read right to left, being a "Showa era 11th Year, 9th Month, 22nd Day" (22nd September, 1936) date. The badge’s light weight and light colored box is 1 7/8" wide, 2 9/16" tall, and 5/8" deep, and separates along its sides. To its cover is impressed, in gold, four columns of kanji characters, two large and two small. Ink stamped, in red, to the interior of the cover and within a vertical rectangle, are at least four columns of indiscernible kanji. The interior base of the box is lined in removable, paper-backed, navy blue velvet, which exhibits moderate nap wear. The consigner reports that this is a Home Defence Fire Unit badge, commemorating an Imperial visit to the Saga prefecture in Kyushu on the aforementioned date.
