J006657 (IJA) CASED SPECIAL MEMBER RETIRED SOLDIER'S BADGE. Two veterans’ badges, one centered on a rosette, in an original presentation case. The 1 13/16" x 2 3/16" x 5/8", lightweight wooden case, which separates along its sides, has two columns of kanji characters, impressed in gold, to its cover, and two or three ink stamped kanji, within a cartouche, to the upper right of its base. When opened, its interior base is lined in purple colored, ribbed paper, which has a noticeable tear to it, and to the interior of its cover is glued a piece of paper with nine columns of kanji characters printed to it. The eighth column form the right translates to "Showa era 11th Year, 9th Month, 25th Day," or, 25th September, 1936. The leftmost column is a repetition of the right column impressed to the cover, with two additional characters to its base, and the first four characters of the rightmost column repeat the left column to the cover. Within is a 5/8" wide and 15/16" tall, gilt washed alloy, shield shaped veterans’ association badge, featuring, to its obverse, a fouled anchor and crossed swords on a pebbled background, over which is affixed a five-pointed star. Dual prongs to the reverse of the badge fix it to a 1" diameter plate, which appears to be made of brass, whose reverse has a hinged, vertical pin and catch assembly to it. Between the badge and its backing plate is sandwiched a 1 3/8" diameter "rosette," with a white outer edge, then a circular band of red, and finally, a white interior, decoratively folded to create a radiating effect. The rosette, which is made of either silk or rayon, is typically, lightly age soiled, most noticeably along its edges, and the badge itself has light wear to the finish of its anchor, and more moderate wear to its star. Included with this award is another, more typical example, 11/16" wide and 1 1/16" tall, of silver washed alloy with a brass star. To its reverse is a hinged, vertical pin, with a locking catch assembly near the base. To either side of this is embossed a column of kanji characters, being exact repetitions of those seen to the cover of the case, and, within a circle to the center, is the character "Hon," whose meanings include "true" and "real." Light age soiling and darkening is evident throughout. These were given, in many minor variations, to veterans of the wars in China, Korea, and Manchuria, as well as those against the allied nations.
