J004683 CASED MANCHUKUO NATIONAL FOUNDATION MERIT MEDAL.
The only decoration issued for the "Independent" State of Manchukuo, established by the Japanese occupation forces between 1932 and 1934. Instituted in 1933, it was awarded more as a commemorative decoration than a merit medal. The medal is enclosed in its original black lacquered wooden presentation case. Stamped to its cover, in gold, nine vertically arranged kanji characters. An alloy hinge connects the cover and base along their upper edges, and an alloy stud and swiveling press tab is along their lower edges. The interior cover is lined in padded, white silk, a section of this silk covers the hinge, and the base is lined in white flocking which features a depression following the contours of the medal and ribbon. The black lacquered bronze medal itself features, to its obverse, two vertically-arranged kanji characters, which translate to "National Foundation," encircled by two arching "kaoliang" stalks, whose heads, as with the characters, appear to have originally been silvered. To the reverse are three vertical columns of characters, the leftmost having the character for "year" to its base, and the center translating as "National Foundation Merit Medal." The right column and the center column comprise the characters seen to the cover of its case. A perforated loop is to the top of the medal, through which the ribbon’s suspension ring passes. The watered silk ribbon has the colors of Manchukuo to it, being, from left to right, blue, red, a wide central stripe of yellow, white, and black. Scarce.
