J002389 CASED ORDER OF THE RISING SUN, 3RD CLASS.

The Order of the Rising Sun ("Kyuokujitsusho"), established in 1875, could be awarded to either military or civilian personnel for meritorious service. There were eight classes to this order, of which only the lowest two were given to enlisted personnel. Foreigners, on occasion, could also be bestowed this award. This medal, the third of eight classes, is in the form of a 2 3/16" diameter "sun," in gold-plated silver, upon which is enameled thirty-two white "rays," eight long with three short separating each, all emanating from a 5/8" diameter, red garnet center. The reverse is identical to the obverse. The uppermost ray is hinged to a three-lobed spray of jade green enameled Paulownia leaves, outlined and with the veins articulated in gold to the obverse, outlined and with four golden kanji characters to the reverse, which translate to "Order of Merit decoration." The leaves are surmounted by three sets of purple enameled and gold outlined Paulownia flowers on green stalks, seven to the center and five to each side, obverse and reverse. A loop is attached to the top of the seventh flower, through which passes the elongated, gold-plated silver "ring" for the neck ribbon. Its 20" long, 1 3/8" wide, watered silk ribbon is white with 1/4" wide crimson edges. It has a golden-colored alloy press tab and catch arrangement connecting its ends. Complete with original case. Nice!
