J002191 (IJA) M3 (1943) LIEUTENANT’S GREATCOAT.
A private purchase, fully lined, olive drab colored, heavy wool overcoat. The coat has a lay-down collar with a double hook-and-eye closure at the throat, a double breasted front closure, diagonally angled slash pockets, with flaps, to each hip, and an 20cm tall vertical slash behind the left pocket, allowing access to the interior. The column of six brass buttons forming the left of the double breasted front closure are purely decorative, as are the five lowermost identical buttons forming the right column. A French fly is underneath the right column, with conceals the four buttonholes that mate with corresponding tan bakelite buttons sewn to the normally covered, right forward panel. Another bakelite button is sewn to the inside edge of this panel, which mates with a wool, buttonholed tab extending from alongside the left interior armpit. The brass button sewn above its bakelite equivalents to the right panel mates with the uppermost buttonhole to the right column of the double breasted front closure. False French cuffs are to each sleeve, which are both trimmed with a single tress along with a pair of five pointed stars. A vertical box pleat is the upper back. A half belt extends from behind vertical flaps (both of which appear to have had non-functioning buttons, which are presently absent, once sewn to them) to each side of the reverse waistline, with one half of the belt having two brass buttons sewn to it, mating with corresponding buttonholes to the other half. The rear tail skirt vent has three tan bakelite buttons along one side of it, which mate with the buttonholes to a French fly closure on the other side. The interior is lined in an olive drab brushed cotton or synthetic blend, with the sleeves lined in white silk with striped patterns. To the left interior front panel is a vertical slash pocket, above which is sewn a cotton patch with handwritten kanji, while the right breast as a button flap pocket with a silk, elongated, horizontal hexagonal patch, with kanji characters embroidered to it. There is some wear to the fabric, as well as a few moth holes along the shoulder. The chest measures approximately 38".
