J001277 JAPANESE KENDO KOTE (GLOVES).
A pair of formed gloves that were part of the uniform for Kendo that was originally fought with swords, to be replaced with bamboo. In 1939, as Japan prepared to go to war, it became mandatory for boys to take a course in school. As of 1912, Kendo became part of the physical education program. The gloves measure approximately 28cm long with a 15.5cm long padded cuff that has seven pair of holes to accommodate the laces. The hand portion is constructed with white, soft leather that is heavily padded to protect the knuckles and digits. A cotton tag with kanji is to each cuff. These are 1920's/1930's vintage.
