J000190 (IJA) JAPANESE DOG TAG.

BACKGROUND: Identity disks, or "Dog Tags," as used by the Japanese Army and Navy are said to date from the Russo-Japanese war in the early 20th century. As they were devised to identify war dead, during the second world war they were not issued to all troops, with the assumption being that troops sent overseas were the natural recipients. In the mid- to late war period they seem to have not been supplied at all.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Made brass, this oval-shaped identity disc measures 35mm x 45mm. To the obverse of the disk are three vertical columns of kanji characters. Age patina is evident to both faces.
