G017991 PRE- WW1 EAST ASIAN OCCUPATION BRIGADE IMPERIAL GERMAN COLONIAL PENNANT. (Ostasiatche Besatzungs-Brigade)
Circa 1901. A wonderful , double sided, red and white flag measuring approximately 26cm x 36cm mounted on a period black wooden pole with a wooden filial on top retaining about half of its original gold paint finish that mesaures approximately 82cm in overall length. Printed on the flag is an 1870 Iron Cross and the word "Kiautschou," the name of the German colony in China. According to Wikipedia: "Kiautschou Bay was a German leased territory in Imperial and Early Republican China from 1898 to 1914. Covering an area of 213 sq miles, it centered on Kiautschou Bay (Jiaozhou Bay) on the southern coast of the Shandong Peninsula. The administrative center was at Tsingtau (Qingdao). It was operated by the East Asia Squadron of the Imperial German Navy." This flag was probably used as an indoor decoration at the German Embassy or another imperial German office in the colony alongside the traditional red-white-black flag of imperial Germany. Dated for 1912. Some age and soiling, but no rips, tears or holes. Pole is in good condition for its age, with some chipping and paint loss but most of its original black paint remaining. An extraordinary, one-of-a-kind colonial flag perfect for any East Asia display.
