G012491 KAISERLICHE MARINE "FLANDERS" CROSS MEDAL.

BACKGROUND: The Flanders Cross was instituted on September 13, 1921 by the veterans’ association Kameradschaftsverband des Marinekorps Flandern that was eligible for all former military personnel who participated in battles in Flanders.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: A cross shaped Teutonic cross with crossed swords between the arms. The front shows a Flemish lion to the upper arm with the words "Marine" and "Korps" to the left and right arms along with the date 1914/18 to the bottom arm. To the center, is the 1903 pattern Reichskriegsflagge ensign surrounded by a laurel wreath, tied at their bottom. On the reverse, is a crowned naval anchor with a monogram of Wilhelm II. Three clasps are attached to the ribbon that are for "Ypern", "Yser" and "Somme". Of Note: In most cases a specific entry in a Soldbuch was neccessary as proof to receive the clasps. The clasps were made of Buntmetal.
