BACKGROUND:
The Becker 20 mm automatic cannon was originally developed for aircraft use by Stahlwerke Becker - Reinickendorf. It had a 15 round vertical feed magazine that could be fired wither in single shot mode or fully automatic at a rate of 325 rounds per minute. After further development by AWS (Artillieriewerkstatt Spandau), the production of the "Type M2" commenced in June 1916 and was installed in heavy bombers, such as the, Gotha VIV , Friedrichshafen GIII and the AEG GIV. Spandau further developed the cannon for Army use, resulting in the "Type 3" which was produced by MAN (Maschinenfabrik Augsburg-Nürnberg). The Type 3 was used with an anti-tank gun with armour piercing rounds and high explosive rounds. Total production numbers of both models is thought to be 539.PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: A Becker HE or High Explosive round, is a two piece projectile consisting of of machined steel base that is fitted with lead alloy impact detonator. The round measures approximately 15cm in length. Nicely maker marked and dated for 1918.
