G006581 PRE WW1 GERMAN SCHUTZTRUPPE PHOTOGRAPH.
Pre WWI German Schutztruppe CDV. Roughly 11cm x 7cm. Typical Carte de Visite size, identified to "Soldat Anton Hoher No. 1089" of Ravensburg. Hoher is wearing a standard issue Campaign Hat (Hut) with one side pinned up, made of straw. Pose in front of cactus plants suggests German Southwest Africa (Deutsche Südost Afrika, or DWSA) as the location of the photo as this is a common motif for portraits taken there. Also, a small wooden sign at his feet says "Auf Wiedersehen" ("until we meet again"), which is also a common element in photographs of Schutztruppe already in or deploying to DWSA.
