M1897 Pith Helmet for Schutztruppe in German East Africa. Exceptionally rare, museum quality specimen of the Model 1897 pith helmet with the large metal national Cockade made especially for the pith helmet mounted to the front above the brim, as worn in German East Africa by officers and NCO's. White cotton body with correct 6-panel construction with typical green cotton liner, complete with leather sweatband set off from the liner by eight cork spacers to allow air to flow up into the dome of the helmet. Typical, correct 3-channel ventilator dome affixed with threaded brass hardware. Correct brass mounting loops for chinstrap are present on the left and right sides. Cork body is solid without any breaks or dents. Roughly a size 55. Rare opportunity to own a textbook example of a classic piece of imperial German headgear in exceptional condition.
