Imperial German Army Tropical Pith Helmet for East Asia. Manufactured by the firm of Ludwig Bortfeldt circa 1896 in Hamburg. Bordfeldt was a prolific manufacturer of tropical pith helmets in Germany at the turn of the last century, making many different styles and models. This is a private purchase helmet for officers of the infantry of the East Asia Brigade which served in China before World War 1. Khaki cotton fabric stretched over a pressed cork body. The leather sweatband is embossed with the Bortfeldt logo. The imperial Wappen worn by all units of the East Asia Brigade is mounted to the front of the helmet with two vertical metal prongs through four sets of thread loops, as always seen on Bortfeldt helmets. Roughly a size 54/55. No chinstrap. A museum-quality example of a rare imperial German tropical helmet for infantry officers.
