G002690 M1917 STICK GRENADE (Inert/Deactivated).
BACKGROUND:
In 1917 the German began to replace the Ammonium Nitrate (high explosive) used in the M1915 and M1916 Stielhandgranate with Trinitrotoluene (TNT). The result was the M1917 Stielhandgranate which although it had a smaller canister and was lighter, the blast was even more devastating that the previous models. When the M1916 Stielhandgranate was introduced with the porcelain ball and string to arm the igniter and fuse, although it was an improvement over the string taped to the bottom of the handle, it was difficult to twist off with cold, muddy or wet hands. So a star shaped piece was riveted to the bottoms of the screw caps to facilitate easy removal, even with gloves. Final interesting fact: by the end of the war in November 1918, the Germans were producing nine million hand grenades each month.PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: On this example the paint on the can, bottom, and the white paint for the detonator instructions on the side of the can "VOR GEBRAUCH SPRENGKAPSEL EINSETZEN" has survived quite nicely. Both wood and head match, being from the manufacturer ESB so they have been together forever. Nothing much else to say about this other than it is one of the best M1917 Stielhandgranate I have ever seen as most of the paint is intact. And made in 1917 as you can see by the date.
Please note, due to Postal Regulations. De-activated firearms and Inert Ordnance may not be shipped outside of Canada.
